WHAT ARE THE TWO BUSINESS MODELS OF THESE COMPANIES?

HOW ARE THEY BECOMMING MORE SIMILLER?

Ultimately Netflix is becoming a bit more like HBO and HBO is becoming a bit more like Netflix.

WHAT ARE SOME GOOD EXAMPLES OF NETFLIX AND HBO'S ACTION TO DEVELOPE ONLINE SUBSCRIPTION?

It has pioneered the “big data” approach to online media, whereby every possible measure of enjoyment is captured, analysed and stored forever. Netflix knows every film and television show every single one of its more than one million British subscribers have ever watched and when, and whether they stuck with each until the end. It will have a better idea than any traditional broadcaster would have about whether its big investment in House of Cards was worthwhile.

Currently, the service has 6.5 million registered users, only a fraction of HBO’s total 29 million subscribers. As Netflix and Hulu both begin to roll out their own custom online-only content, it may be a smart idea for HBO to increase their market share by allowing customers to subscribe to an online-only HBO GO.

HBO Watch notes that a subscription to the premium cable service can cost between $15 and $20 a month on top of a normal cable bill. If HBO opened up their HBO GO service to non-cable suscribers, customers would expect to pay between $10 and $15 each month for the online-only service, Reuters notes. Under this model, HBO GO would be more expensive than both Netflix and Hulu Plus ($8 per month each).

Cinema attendance on the online age:

WHY WAS CINEMA ATTENDANCE SO LOW IN THE 1980'S?

People slowly started to own a T.V at home so they didn’t really need to go to the cinema
And spend more money on watching a film. The use of the VHS started to grow and people started to rent videos.

WHY HAVE CINEMA TICKET SALES GROWN SINCE 1984?

The reason why the ticket sales started to grow was because that more people started to attend the cinema because they like the cinema experience, it’s not like being at home and watching the T.V. So therfore rising the price of the tickets they would make more profit.

IN 2006 DVD MARKET SHARE WAS 56% -  FIND OUT WHAT IT REPRESENTS NOW AND IN THE FUTURE.

While standard DVD still comprises 97.1% of the market, SNL Kagan projects that high-definition DVD will attain 59.7% market share in 2014, with $13.1 billion in revenue. By 2017, this figure is expected to soar to 73.8%, or $15.6 billion.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT CINEMA TURNOVER?

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE AUDIENCE BEHAVIOUR AS A RESULT OF ONLINE TECHNOLOGIES?

Media in the online age- how significant has the internet been to media audiences?

The Internet has been very celebrated for its audience. Many people around the world use the internet for many things.  The internet for example can mainly be used for films or music.

In the film industry the internet has been very useful, if a person would want to watch a film they would most likely watch it on the internet because it’s easier, faster and cheaper than going out to the cinemas. The disadvantage for this is that piracy reduces revenue; people either download films legally or illegally. It’s a disadvantage for future projects, therefore less people would be going cinema, and people can now have access through the internet or their TV. As for 3D films they combat piracy because a lot people cannot watch 3D films without the 3D glasses.

The way the films are distributed is mainly by old media marketing like posters, trailers and magazines. Web 2.0 is a new web where it has allowed people to work together and have their own say through social networking sites and YouTube.

Many people now access films very easily for example the legal way is through Netflix, love film, now TV and sky box office where you can pay per view.  This does have a few benefits to it, for example it is delivered directly to your home screens so it’s easier and much quicker. Now you have an increased choice in how to access films for example by PC and Tablet. The illegal way which people watch films are from websites like let me watch this, movie 2k, put locker, project free TV, sock share and sidereet. People can comment on the videos and rate the quality of the film, they have the ability to interact with anyone on the internet. So therefore the disadvantage for this is that it might not really be good, so you’re much more likely better of paying to watch the films.

Audience Theories

The Coursework that I will be analysing is my A2 teaser trailer film production that I created this year.

In the demographics view, my target audience is mainly teenagers, which is at the social grade E because they do not earn much as adults and their still in education. Also the main characters are media college students trying to film their own horror movie but then things go wrong. I studied my target audience before making the trailer. I researched on the way teenagers would dress to college so that I can get costumes for my characters to dress in a similar way, which was dressing in casual jeans, jackets and hats. This is one of the ways where I can attract my target audience. Also another example is the car, middle and working class teenagers would mostly have an average car to drive so the target audience would feel that they are a part of the film and they would be more interested to see it because it is their ‘kind’ of thing. In the trailer the teenagers are up to no good, the boys in the car are excited to go on an adventure and don’t care if anything goes wrong, where as typically the girls would be the ones worried and scared.

The psychographics way of looking at the people I think is the explorer category; this is because they have a lot of energy, experience and love challenges and adventures. In the trailer I showed that there is an adventures scary situation where they get lost in the forest and try to find a way out.

For uses and gratifications, I use a particular media than content. For the media effects I left it basic so my audience can understand it but also made it a bit daunting to give them that thrilling feeling when they watch it. The media generally attracts the audience because they know who would like it or watch it, so I had to do my research in the media to find out information about my audience so I know who my target audiences are.

Claude Lévi-Strauss

He argued that the "savage" mind had the same structures as the "civilized" mind and that human characteristics are the same everywhere. These observations culminated in his famous book Tristes Tropiques, which positioned him as one of the central figures in the structuralist school of thought, where his ideas reached into fields including the humanities, sociology and philosophy.

Lévi-Strauss sought to apply the structural linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure to anthropology. At the time, the family was traditionally considered the fundamental object of analysis, but was seen primarily as a self-contained unit consisting of a husband, a wife, and their children. Nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents all were treated as secondary. Lévi-Strauss argued that, however, akin to Saussure's notion of linguistic value, families acquire determinate identities only through relations with one another. Thus he inverted the classical view of anthropology, putting the secondary family members first and insisting on analyzing the relations between units instead of the units themselves.

Exam intro

I will be answering three questions in total.
Question 1a will ask us on how the skills we have acquired since the start of the AS course till the end of the A2 year and refer to both coursework pieces. The question will be on one or two of the following things:

v  Digital Technology ( iMacs, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, etc)
v  Creativity ( this is generally to see how easy you came up with your idea)
v  Research and Planning ( what opening sequences I analysed etc)
v  Post Production ( Editing, Photoshop , Final Cut Pro, Etc)
v  Using conventions of real media texts ( what conventions did I use etc)

Question 1b will be the theoretical evaluation of one of my coursework productions. I will be asked to analyse either my AS opening sequence or my A2 teaser trailer. This is also done through one of the following concepts:

v  Genre
v  Narrative
v  Representation
v  Audience
v  Media Language.

In Question 2 it is based on the topic of Media in the Online Age. This includes the following:

v  How has online media developed
v  What has been the impact of the internet on media production
v  How is consumer behaviour and audience response transformed by online media, in relation to the past
v  To what extent has convergence transformed the media
