Audience Theories

The Coursework that I will be analysing is my A2 teaser trailer film production that I created this year.

In the demographics view, my target audience is mainly teenagers, which is at the social grade E because they do not earn much as adults and their still in education. Also the main characters are media college students trying to film their own horror movie but then things go wrong. I studied my target audience before making the trailer. I researched on the way teenagers would dress to college so that I can get costumes for my characters to dress in a similar way, which was dressing in casual jeans, jackets and hats. This is one of the ways where I can attract my target audience. Also another example is the car, middle and working class teenagers would mostly have an average car to drive so the target audience would feel that they are a part of the film and they would be more interested to see it because it is their ‘kind’ of thing. In the trailer the teenagers are up to no good, the boys in the car are excited to go on an adventure and don’t care if anything goes wrong, where as typically the girls would be the ones worried and scared.

The psychographics way of looking at the people I think is the explorer category; this is because they have a lot of energy, experience and love challenges and adventures. In the trailer I showed that there is an adventures scary situation where they get lost in the forest and try to find a way out.

For uses and gratifications, I use a particular media than content. For the media effects I left it basic so my audience can understand it but also made it a bit daunting to give them that thrilling feeling when they watch it. The media generally attracts the audience because they know who would like it or watch it, so I had to do my research in the media to find out information about my audience so I know who my target audiences are.

Claude Lévi-Strauss

He argued that the "savage" mind had the same structures as the "civilized" mind and that human characteristics are the same everywhere. These observations culminated in his famous book Tristes Tropiques, which positioned him as one of the central figures in the structuralist school of thought, where his ideas reached into fields including the humanities, sociology and philosophy.

Lévi-Strauss sought to apply the structural linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure to anthropology. At the time, the family was traditionally considered the fundamental object of analysis, but was seen primarily as a self-contained unit consisting of a husband, a wife, and their children. Nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents all were treated as secondary. Lévi-Strauss argued that, however, akin to Saussure's notion of linguistic value, families acquire determinate identities only through relations with one another. Thus he inverted the classical view of anthropology, putting the secondary family members first and insisting on analyzing the relations between units instead of the units themselves.

Exam intro

I will be answering three questions in total.
Question 1a will ask us on how the skills we have acquired since the start of the AS course till the end of the A2 year and refer to both coursework pieces. The question will be on one or two of the following things:

v  Digital Technology ( iMacs, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, etc)
v  Creativity ( this is generally to see how easy you came up with your idea)
v  Research and Planning ( what opening sequences I analysed etc)
v  Post Production ( Editing, Photoshop , Final Cut Pro, Etc)
v  Using conventions of real media texts ( what conventions did I use etc)

Question 1b will be the theoretical evaluation of one of my coursework productions. I will be asked to analyse either my AS opening sequence or my A2 teaser trailer. This is also done through one of the following concepts:

v  Genre
v  Narrative
v  Representation
v  Audience
v  Media Language.

In Question 2 it is based on the topic of Media in the Online Age. This includes the following:

v  How has online media developed
v  What has been the impact of the internet on media production
v  How is consumer behaviour and audience response transformed by online media, in relation to the past
v  To what extent has convergence transformed the media
